Design projects
Information and advice on using development sites for design
projects to reinforce students’ learning can be found
in the learning units. For the first short project, which
takes place wholly in the classroom (Unit 2: What makes a good place?) a large site in a local urban setting should
be selected.
For the second project, a key urban development site is
recommended, for which a mix of uses is likely to be planned.
This project could involve invited experts,
and should include a site visit and a site analysis. This
is followed by a design project using paper collage for
which materials are supplied. Information about Oxford’s
Westgate Centre site is supplied as a case study which teachers
can use for a design project, or as an example on which
to model a locally based project.
